The 2019 Irish Master started in dramatic and unexpected fashion as Irish amateur from Wexford, Rodney Goggins beat the home favourite, Ken Doherty by 3-1. Ken is still playing on the main tour, only in December 2018 he had pushed the eventual champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan very hard at the UK Championship, So this was a bit of a “shock”.
The next match saw Joe Johnson, the 1986 World Champion play Dennis Taylor, the 1985 World Champion. Joe Johnson prevailed beating Dennis Taylor by 3-1.
The evening session started with the Seniors 2018 World Champion, Aaron Canavan playing the former Crucible quart-finalist from Northern Ireland, Patrick Wallace. This was a rematch from the 2018 World Seniors Championship final. This time it’s Patrick Wallace who came out the winner, beating Aaron Canavan by 3-0.
In the last match of the day, Jimmy White beat Willie Thorne by 3-0. Willie who had gone through difficult times and recently had an eye surgery still struggled with long balls, but played some very good snooker when in the balls.
As usual fans had the opportunity to meet the players and referees before the matches.
