2021 WSS ROKIT World Championship – QF

All quarter-finals wre played yesterday and here are the reports by WPBSA as posted on WST website:

Afternoon session:

Figueirdo And Wallace Into Semis

Igor Figueiredo and Patrick Wallace are both through to Finals Day at the 2021 ROKiT World Seniors Snooker Championship after they won their quarter-final matches at the Crucible Theatre this afternoon.

In a clash of current main tour players, Brazilian Figueiredo reproduced the impressive form that saw him nearly qualify for the world professional championship here last month, as he eliminated Stephen Hendry 4-1 with a string of breaks.

It was King of the Crucible Hendry who held the upper hand early on in the contest, after registering a run of 76 to claim the opening frame.

However, that was as good as it got for the Scot as the South American levelled up with the help of 31 and 41 breaks, before really finding his scoring groove and taking the lead with an effort of 100 – the third century of this year’s competition so far.

Figueiredo broke down on a break of 30 in frame four, but his opponent failed to capitalise and a returning contribution of 61 put him one away from victory at 3-1.

With his back against the wall, a determined Hendry looked like reducing his arrears in the fifth, but ran out of position on 62 and went in-off when attempting a tricky red. A clinical Figueiredo subsequently fashioned the perfect counter-attack, clearing up to and including the black for 68 to claim a 4-1 victory.

The 43-year-old is now just one match away from his second final on the world seniors circuit having been runner-up to Ken Doherty in the 2018 UK Seniors Championship in Hull.

Twenty years on from losing a tight quarter-final at the Crucible Theatre in the world professional championship, Wallace this time finished on the correct side of a close last eight affair at the venue after ousting Barry Pinches 4-2.

The Northern Irishman took a protracted opening frame on the pink, and was set fare to extend his lead in frame two whilst on a break of 43, before missing and having to watch Pinches reply with a classy 83 clearance which made it 1-1.

Wallace produced efforts of 55 and 59 to retake the lead with frame three, although Norwich cueman Pinches squared it again after a fragmented fourth frame.

For the third time in the match Wallace went in front with the aid of a crucial break of 31, before getting over the line in a nervy sixth frame.

Igor Figueiredo played really well in his quarter-final against Stephen Hendry. Stephen’s attacking approach suits him to the core. Stephen Hendry is still a long way to get his game back where he needs to be.

The Patrick Wallace v Barry Piches affair was painful to watch in the early stages. Both improved afterwards … fortunately.

Evening session:

White And Lilley Set For Final Day

Jimmy White and David Lilley completed the semi-finals line-up for the 2021 ROKiT World Seniors Snooker Championship with victories in Sheffield on Saturday night.

White stretched his undefeated run in this event at the Crucible Theatre to 10 matches, after a 4-1 triumph over former winner Darren Morgan.

In a rerun of the title match here in 2019, Londoner White racked up runs of 46 and 41 in taking the first frame, but Morgan lit up the stage in the next with an amazing total clearance of 134 – bettering the previous tournament high break of 112 that he crafted in round one. It is the highest break in this championship since 2015.

Welshman Morgan continued his fine scoring into the third frame, although he missed on 52. He later had another chance, but it was White who finished the frame with a smile on his face as he cleared up with 36 to pinch it by a single point.

The Whirlwind would deal another body blow to his opponent in frame four. Morgan was on the cusp of levelling the match when on a break of 49 but a miss on a difficult red allowed White to clear with 40 and win on the black ball again for 3-1.

Frame five was a scrappy affair but the defending champion held the advantage almost throughout, later claiming it to set up an intriguing last four tie with Brazil’s Igor Figueiredo.

Lilley produced a steely clearance in the deciding frame to resist a comeback from Ken Doherty and arrange a semi-final date with Patrick Wallace on Sunday afternoon.

The tone for a topsy-turvy encounter was set in frame one when Lilley cleared up with 31 to swipe it on the black. He then doubled his advantage in a low-scoring second frame.

With his opponent struggling to settle, Lilley looked like making it 3-0 when on a break of 41 and nearing the snookers required stage before an unexpected miss let the 1997 world professional champion in. It was an opportunity Doherty grasped, constructing a morale-boosting clearance of 63 to halve his deficit.

The next frame saw Irishman Doherty heading towards parity on an effort of 57 – but when he jawed a red – roles were reversed from the previous frame and three-time English Amateur Champion Lilley mopped up with 55 to chalk up his second black ball success in the match.

Momentum would shift again, though, as Doherty bounced back with the aid of 34 to pocket frame five, before forcing it all the way come the conclusion of frame six.

The six-time ranking event winner edged closer to completing the turnaround before a pink went awry on a run of 40. In what was the final swing of the pendulum, Lilley seized his chance, compiling a cool break of 69 to go through in dramatic circumstances.

Darren Morgan scored the highest break of the tournament so far in the only frame he won but didn’t otherwiseimpress me. He looked frustrated. Jimmy White was solid.

It was a disappointing evening and a disappointing performance from Ken Doherty. He fought hard but it was not enough. David Lilley played well, especially considering that he had issues with his tip.

Ronnie was around all day, watching and supporting the tournament and the sponsor

And Andy Chubb took this wonderful photograph of this wonderful arena. Shot of the tournament for me that!

2021 Seniors World Championship – Last 16

The last 16 round at the WSS ROKIT 2021 World Championship was plaeyd over the last two days. This is the outcome:

SeniorsWC2021QFDraw

So here is what happened over the last three days.

Wednesday was media day. Rob Walker who works as MC, pundit, commentator and journalist recorded interviews with the players. Those interviews were shown as part of the last round coverage.

Four matches were played on Thursday

Afternoon session results:

Darren Morgan 3-2 Lee Walker – David Lilley 3-1 Philip Williams

These matches reports are available on the new Seniors Snooker official Website.

Darren Morgan v Lee Walker was an excellent match. Darren played really well and, if he can keep this level, he is definitely one of the favourites for the title.

Evening session results:

Stephen Hendry 3-0 Patsy Fagan – Patrick Wallace 3-2 Michael Judge

These matches reports are available on the new Seniors Snooker official Website.

Stephen Hendry didn’t convince me despite the 3-0 victory. Patrick Wallace and Michael Judge served us an excellent match. It’s a shame that one of them had to go out in the first round really.

And four matches were played on Friday

Afternoon session results:

Ken Doherty 3-0 Joe Johnson – Barry Pinches 3-0 Dennis Taylor

These matches reports are available on the new Seniors Snooker official Website.

Both Ken and Barry played well but weren’t actually put under any pressure by their opponents.

Right after the match Dennis Taylor announced that he is retiring from competitive snooker but will continue to do exhibitions and play in Legends events. Everyone present at the venue paid tribute to the 1985 World Champion.

All the Best Dennis!

Evening session results:

Jimmy White 3-0 Tony Knowles –  Igor Figueiredo 3-0 John Parrott

These matches reports are available on the new Seniors Snooker official Website.

Jimmy White looked extremely nervous at the start of the match but started to play better towards the end. Igor Figueiredo becamethe first South American to play at the Crucible and he played really well. He’s definitely a contender for the title. John Parrott played decent and came up with some great shots as well. This was an entertaining match.

Ronnie who is of course a ROKIT embassador popped in…

SeniorsWC2021L16-29

It was an entertaining couple of days at the Crucible and the coverage is excellent.

The event will be shown on BBC.

My predicted winners are: Darren Morgan, David Lilley, Stephen Hendry, Mick Judge, Ken Doherty, Barry Pinches, Jimmy White and Igor Figueiredo. I expect matches 1 and 4 to be very close though. It’s ashame that Patrick Wallace and Mick Judge play each other in the first round. The match 2 outcome is pure guessing on my part as I have never seen Philip Williams play.

The Four who will be at the Crucible…

The 2021 Seniors Q-School 2 concluded yesterday evening in Reading, and these are the four who will head t…o the Crucible in May: Patrick Wallace, Darren Morgan, Lee Walker and Phil Williams.

Here is the report by WPBSA:

Seniors Quartet Qualify for Crucible

Northern Ireland’s Patrick Wallace and Welsh trio Lee Walker, Darren Morgan and Phil Williams will all line up for the 2021 ROKiT World Seniors Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre next month after graduating from the latest Q School in Reading this evening (Sunday).

Over 90 players entered the week-long competition at the Crucible Sports and Social Club in Berkshire hoping to obtain one of the four remaining berths for the final stages of the championship that will once again be broadcast live on BBC platforms.

Following on from the year’s opening Seniors Q School in January, this second edition was split into two phases with 12 players emerging from the first six day’s action to contest ‘Judgement Day’ on Sunday.

The Qualifiers

Patrick Wallace is set to feature at the iconic Sheffield venue in this event for the second consecutive year.

The former world number 34 – who reached the quarter-finals of the world professional championship on debut in 2001 – got the better of current main tour player Gerard Greene whilst advancing from Thursday’s action. Returning a couple of days later, the 51-year-old from Dungannon was flawless, making breaks of 81 and 61 as he defeated Steve Crowley 4-0 before further runs of 100 and 73 in another 4-0 victory, this time over Stuart Watson.

Wallace will be hoping to go one better than 2018 when he lost to eventual champion Aaron Canavan in a deciding frame final in Scunthorpe.

Lee Walker was the only active professional to make it through this time in Reading, and he needed to endure deciding frame finishes in order to do so.

A graduate of the WST Q-School last summer, 45-year-old Walker came top of his initial group on Tuesday before having to win the final two frames of his playoff match with 2012 champion Nigel Bond in which he compiled runs of 91 and 89.

He recommenced his challenge with a 4-0 victory (breaks of 62 and 72) over Wayne Townsend, before crossing cues with Canavan in an all-or-nothing encounter.

Jersey national champion Canavan led the tie three times, crafting a 58 to move one away from qualification. However, faced with the same predicament he experienced earlier in the week, Walker constructed breaks of 62 and 55 to win 4-3.

It will be Walker’s first time in the main draw of the world seniors championship and he will return to the Crucible Theatre for the first time as a player since 2004.

Winner of this title in 2011, Darren Morgan will be back in Sheffield for the third year running after he eliminated another former champion in the shape of 2017 victor Peter Lines at the final hurdle.

The former world number 8 – who has made the final on two further occasions, including at the Crucible two years ago – finished top of his group on Tuesday before sweeping aside Alfie Burden 4-0 with breaks of 63 and 70 in the end-of-day playoffs.

On finals day he ousted Ant Parsons 4-3 on the final black – despite needing a snooker in the deciding frame – before efforts of 55 and 62 helped him deny main tour exponent Lines 4-2 in a winner-takes-all clash.

Qualification will be of relief to Morgan as he was pipped by Barry Pinches in the final round during January’s Q-School.

A former professional of nine seasons, Phil Williams will fulfil a lifelong dream when he plays at the Crucible Theatre for the first time next month.

The 53-year-old survived a deciding frame against Jonathan Bagley on Wednesday to reach the final day where he upset professional Rory McLeod 4-0 (75 break) and then defeated John Hunter 4-2 with a top run of 53 to head the group and secure his ticket.

It is the second time that Williams has qualified for the final stages of this championship – he did so in 2013 when it was held in Portsmouth under a different guise.

This successful quartet join January Q-School qualifiers David Lilley and Barry Pinches and the players automatically in the main draw for the championship.

Taking place from 6-9 May, the 2021 ROKiT World Seniors Snooker Championship features defending champion Jimmy White who is aiming to lift the trophy at the Crucible Theatre for a third consecutive year.

After the January Q-school there were moans about the fact that the active professionals were too hard to beat, and amateurs had next to no chance now that the older pros are able to compete on rge Seniors tour. This edition proved that wrong.

Congratulations to all graduates!

2021 Seniors Q-School 2 starts today

The Seniors Q-school 2 started earlier today. Four players will have the opportunity to play at the Crucible  come May 2021.

Ahead of the event, Jason Francis wrote this “Open Letter” and shared it on social media.

An Open letter to all ROKiT World Seniors Tour Players…

As we sit on the eve of another ROKiT World Seniors Snooker Event I want to remind you all how far we’ve come and how you have all played a part in that journey.
Four years ago our sport did not have a Seniors Tour, by next Sunday four more players will be in receipt of a cue sports life changing opportunity. To play Snooker at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield is a privilege reserved only for those who have excelled in our sport, to play in the single table set up is something even more unique.
What everyone has built in such a short time is staggering, a global tour with over 300 registered players, a new earning opportunity for WPBSA Tour professionals over 40, a vehicle to provide a platform to remember, honour and enjoy the legends of our sport.
The opportunity for any player over 40 years of age, of any gender or ability, to put on a waistcoat, pick up their cue and dare to dream had never existed.
The harder the mountain is to climb the more rewarding it is when you reach its summit. We strive to improve, we attempt to inspire and we don’t ever apologise for doing either of those things.

We are Seniors, We Dare to Dream, We are here to stay. #WeAreSeniors

Lets hit some balls,

Jason Francis, Chairman ROKiT World Seniors Snooker Tour.

Jason was also happy to share the news that all covid tests so far had come out negative.

Seniors Q-School 2 – two more spots at the Crucible for the grabs

This was announced on social media by Jason Francis yesterday:

The ROKiT World Seniors Snooker Tour today announces two more opportunities for their tour players at Qualifying School next week in Reading.

The World Seniors Championship field has always been made up from legends of the sport, our former champions and qualifiers from open events staged for any player of any ability or gender over 40 years of age. There has also been rewards for continental champions from our World Snooker Federation regions.

With the continuing challenges of COVID-19, and in particular international travel, plus the fact many of our partners have not staged their Championships this season, it has been decided that four players, not two will progress from Qualifying School next week and take their place at the Crucible Theatre in May.

That event, which will be broadcast once again by the BBC, will play from the 6th – 9th May with Jimmy White defending champion. Thanks to an agreement with the World Snooker Tour lower ranked WPBSA tour players over 40 have also had the chance this season to receive invitations or qualification from the events.

Group stages at Qualifying School will be played from Monday 29th to Saturday 3rd April, two players each day will qualify to the finals day on Sunday 4th. In a change from the original format those 12 qualifiers will be drawn into 4 random groups of 3 with a round robin best of 7 providing four group winners. The final days play will be streamed live on the World Seniors Facebook Page.

The 2021 World Seniors Snooker Champion will take their place on the Champion of Champions Qualification list.

This is great news for all the players involved

Unfortunately, there is this as well

No streaming ... Paul Tett

It’s a shame, and frankly I don’t understand WST stand on this in this particular case. Surely those two events are not in competition? I know it’s the rule, and I know some tour players might are in it, but certainly none of those invited in the CLS. A bit of flexibility wouldn’t hurt IMO.

WSS Irish Masters posponed to 2022

As, unfortunately, the covid crisis continues to be a major health concern, the Seniors Irish Masters had to be postponed again, this time to March 2022.

Here is Jason Francis announcement on social media:

WSSIrishMasters2022Poster

IRISH MASTERS MOVED TO 2022. We are sorry to once again need to move the Seniors Irish Masters to 2022. All tickets remain valid for the new dates. Refunds available from Ticket Master Ireland. We will return to this great Irish Venue in 2022.

This has’nt come as a surprise to me as, last week, Aer Lingus had informed me that my flights had been canceled.

There is nothing WSS can do really, and, of course, players, officials and fans health and safety are the priority. Hopefully we can have a blast in Goff in 2022.

Reflecting on a wonderful January 2021 Q-School

After the conclusion of the Q-School on Sunday night, WPBSA published this report about the event:

The ROKiT Phones World Seniors Q School event reached its conclusion yesterday (Sunday) in Reading with eight places at the venue stages of upcoming major tournaments decided.

The event, which represented the first open-entry competition organised by the WPBSA following the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, ran across seven days at the Crucible Sports and Social Club in Reading. Eight places at four tournaments were to be won, with a mix of current professionals and amateur players taking part.

WORLD SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP

Barry Pinches and David Lilley both successfully came through an 86-player draw to secure their places at the venue stages of the World Seniors Championship this May.

Pinches secured his place at the Crucible following a dramatic 4-3 victory against former World Seniors champion Darren Morgan in his final qualifying match. Welshman Morgan had led 2-0 and 3-2, but it was Pinches who claimed the last two frames to secure his return to a venue at which he competed three times as a professional, memorably reaching the last 16 in 2004.

Three-time English Amateur Championship winner Lilley meanwhile produced a high-quality performance to defeat Wayne Townsend 4-2. Breaks of 72, 63, 60 and 60 were enough to see the 45-year-old prevail and earn a debut at snooker’s most famous venue in just a few months time.

UK SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP

Four places at the UK Seniors Championship in Hull were decided with Barry Pinches, David Lilley, Phil Williams and Kuldesh Johal all making it through to the final four of this week’s qualifying tournament.

For Pinches and Lilley their victories ensured that it was a near-perfect week of snooker as the pair qualified for two of the three available events, with 4-1 victories against Stuart Watson and Mark Gray respectively enough to secure their places at the Bonus Arena.

Both Williams and Johal however were pushed all the way, Williams defeating former world number 42 Andrew Norman in a deciding-frame, while Johal was also a 4-3 winner against Wayne Cooper.

SENIORS MASTERS

Also up for grabs last week were two places at the upcoming Seniors Masters tournament, scheduled to be held at the Alexandra Palace.

The first was claimed by Darren Morgan, who won seven matches, including four against current professional players to win the Masters qualifying tournament. Having defeated Peter Lines, Nigel Bond and Andy Hicks to reach the final, he would deny David Lilley a qualification hat-trick by coming through a deciding-frame to claim the place.

He will be joined there by Gary Filtness, who overcame recent back problems in recent weeks to defeat Ashley Beal 4-0 in the final of the Super Seniors tournament for players aged 55 or over.

118 Covid tests were conducted, and ALL came negative. Well done the Seniors! Nobody’s gone to Dubai over Christmas to sing “Gigi l’Amoroso” in the bars then … 😇
But maybe the most impressive aspect of the event was the level of engagement it triggered on social media.
Honestly, I’ ve never seen anything like this before. It was just overwhelming. So many players, and fans, contributing to the event by their comments, and following the matches on Facebook, during the event.
And so many, thanking Jason Francis, Paul Tett, Ian Wagstaff (TD), the club, the players and the referees for a great event that has really lifted their spirits during these very difficult times.
I picked just  one example, but there were/are dozens of similar posts on the Seniors Tour page and the Seniors Players forum.
